Chinese consumers' growing interest in functional beverages, antioxidant teas, and caffeine-free alternatives has created documented demand for rooibos in China's ¥420 billion health beverage market, but the 12-15% Chinese import duty on herbal teas and the 6-10% duty on health supplement ingredients has limited South African exports to small-volume specialty channels. Zero-tariff access from May 1, 2026 changes the economics for mainstream distribution. South Africa's health supplement sector — buchu extract, fynbos botanical formulations, omega-3 from Cape fish oils, and various plant-based adaptogen ingredients — all benefit from the same tariff removal. Chinese health supplement manufacturers and TCM ingredient companies are actively seeking diversified botanical ingredient sourcing as Chinese domestic supply chain concentration creates resilience concerns.
