Requirement
Tanzania's artisanal and small-scale gold mining sector produces an estimated 15-20 tonnes of gold annually — valued at over $900M at current prices — yet operates largely outside the formal economy, with 95% sold through informal channels that bypass taxation, environmental compliance, and worker safety protections. The Tanzania Minerals Audit Agency's formalisation programme, supported by World Bank and GIZ financing, has mapped 847 artisanal mining sites and established a legal framework for cooperative licensing — creating the first viable investment pathway for formalised artisanal gold that generates certified, conflict-free supply chain documentation. This investment opportunity targets $3M–$10M for a formalised artisanal mining cooperative investment: combining cooperative licensing support, small-scale processing equipment financing (mercury-free gravity concentration and smelting), environmental compliance infrastructure, and responsible gold certification to the Fairmined or equivalent standard. The investor receives a revenue share from certified gold sales, expected to generate 18-25% IRR over a 4-6 year horizon at current gold prices. The ideal investor is a responsible mining fund, impact investor with natural resources mandate, or precious metals trading company with Fairmined/Fairtrade certification capability. Community benefit requirements include minimum 15% of net revenue to community development fund and zero child or forced labour documentation. AfroSynergy structures this through the Investment Deal template at Enhanced tier. Deal room includes TAMA licensing documentation, GPS site maps, existing production data, and Fairmined pre-assessment report. Government co-investment from Tanzania's Mining Commission available for processing equipment component. Gold prices at 10-year highs in 2025-2026 have dramatically improved the economics of formalised artisanal mining. The EU Conflict Minerals Regulation — requiring responsible sourcing documentation for gold imports from 2026 — is creating unprecedented demand from European gold traders and jewellers for Fairmined-certified African supply. Tanzania's formalised sector is the best-positioned in East Africa to supply this demand, given the regulatory framework already in place.
