Requirement

India is the world's largest importer of pulses — spending $2.5 billion annually on pigeon peas (tur dal), lentils, chickpeas, and mung beans — and East Africa supplies approximately 35% of India's pigeon pea imports, making it India's largest agricultural import from the African continent by value. Ethiopian, Tanzanian, and Mozambican smallholder farmers produce high-quality pulses that Indian dal mills require, yet the payment and quality dispute rate on this corridor runs at 22% — one of the highest for any established agricultural commodity trade route globally. The disputes stem from three structural problems: absence of verified third-party inspection at East African ports, payment terms that leave African exporters exposed to Indian buyer default when domestic pulse prices fall, and the absence of an escrow mechanism that protects both parties during the 45-60 day shipping window. This agricultural offtake opportunity structures direct, escrow-protected supply agreements between verified East African pulse exporters (Ethiopia Pulses, Oilseeds and Spices Processors Export Association or Tanzania/Mozambique equivalent, minimum 500 MT seasonal capacity, laboratory-tested moisture and impurity levels) and Indian dal mills or pulse importers seeking reliable East African origin supply with documented quality and payment security. Annual contract value $3M-$12M covering 1,000-4,000 MT per season.
